Our story with Julie Chiesa of InfoDirectors begins nine months after NextGen’s EMR product was formally implemented into our medical practice of family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics. Fully nine months after product training from NextGen, our experience with EMR was characterized by inertia and a lack of progress so extreme that it would have been laughable if we weren’t so frustrated and paralyzed by our inability to fit NextGen EMR into our practice. No clinicians were fully trained, and those that had been partially trained were threatening to mutiny, mostly due to our ineffective training plan and enormous knowledge void about the product. I had the pleasure of meeting Julie Chiesa at my first Nextgen User’s Group meeting. At the specialty break-out session, I was seated with other orthopedic practices and began talking about my painful experience in getting everyone at our office on board with EMR. Seated at that table was Julie; we were then introduced by a group from New York that utilize her services.
Upon my return from the meeting, I decided that in order to “sell” the concept of EMR implementation, I had to start first with the staff. It seemed logical to take a form that we manually complete and have it customized and used through EMR. It was at that moment that I contacted Julie. I had Julie take the three forms that were required of our hospital for surgical scheduling and admission and combine them into one template that produced the three required forms. Our staff was truly wowed. Having phone conferences with myself and staff members, Julie would create different templates. In no time, they began to love it. While we haven’t fully given up paper charts, Julie has made the EMR transition so much easier and our efficiency has drastically increased.
